This was supposed to be for Halloween, but as you can see it's a little late.
It was hard coming up with my favorites because (1) I've seen A LOT of horror flicks, but (2) most of them sucked. I still watch them anyway. The movies listed aren't in any particular order.
---------------
1. Jaws - Steven Spielberg should have done more horror flicks. This had everything. It was a horror, a comedy, an adventure, and a buddy movie all rolled into one. It also had one of the best movie posters ever. Jaws 2 was good too. Jaws 3-D was a comedy.
2. Salem's Lot (1979 TV mini-series) - By today's standards this isn't scary. But, the first time I saw it was when I was about 9 or 10. The scene where the vampire boy rises up to the window and scratches on the glass scared the living shit out of me. I slept with a nightlight after that until I was 12 and made my mom move my bed away from my window. When a movie causes a phobia, it deserves a place on a list.
I found this Salem's Lot vampire boy video on YouTube, but it's not the one I remember. It's close though, but I remember a boy being in a hospital bed and knocking over his IV while walking to the window. The boy was also standing in front of the window and the vampire bit him. Can someone clear this up for me? Is this an updated version or what?
3. The Blair Witch Project - First time I saw it was in the theater. I thought it was okay, but not scary. The second time I watched it was at home, alone, and in the dark. Then, it was scary. One of the best indie cult films ever because it was so original and imaginative. Even the way they marketed it (mostly on the internet in a "Is it fiction...or not?" way) was brilliant. I also liked The BWP II (not as good as the first though).
4. Saw I & II - The first one pushed the envelope and even the most shockproof of horror fans were grossed out. It also began the new genre of torture horror. Saw III was a little TOO much gore and I'm talking specifically about the limb-twisting scene, which was just disturbing. Also, the ending sucked and endings are very important to me. After all that build-up and tension, I need a good release, satisfaction, and closure (I could have just used an orgasm metaphor here). It's just that after all the torturing Jigsaw did to people, he got off pretty easy when it came to his own death.
5. Hostel II - Hostel was okay. Pretty straightforward. I didn't like the ending because it was similar to the one in Saw III. Not satisfying. But, in Hostel II, there were a few twists and turns and it had a great ending. The only criticism I have is the nerdy, naive girl's death scene was way too extreme. How the hell could anyone even imagine a scene like that? That was seriously disturbing.
6. The Grudge I & II (American versions) - Stir of Echoes (Kevin Bacon movie) was the first to introduce the "new ghost." Gone are the floaty,
translucent ghosts or invisible poltergeists, the new ghost is a pale, dead person walking with jerky, stuttery movements. The Grudge took the stuttery ghost and made her double-jointed as well. Both movies were good and have the creepiest ghosts ever, but by the second one I wondered whether someone is ever going to stop Kayako or if she's just going to kill everyone in the world. If there's a third one, I hope it has more of a plot or else it risks becoming another Friday the 13th franchise.
7. The Ring - I liked the gothic feel of this and the idea of a video that kills anyone who watches it. I also saw The Ring II, but I don't remember anything about it. Guess it wasn't that good.
8. The Exorcist - One of the first Devil movies that spawned many more (The Omen, The Exorcism of Emily Rose). I watched it as a kid and it scared the hell out of me (no pun intended).
9. The Shining - Being stuck in a haunted hotel with a psycho axe murderer is not a good position to be in. This is a classic.
10. The Hills Have Eyes I & II - (the new versions, because I don't remember the old ones anymore) - It's a survival film. A family is stuck in the desert with mutant hillbillly cannibals. There were some intense scenes in it and I liked the ending. The second one was good (not as good as the first though), and I liked guessing who survives, who gets killed, and in what order.
