Quote of the Day

"You have to consider the possibility that God does not like you. He never wanted you. In all probability, he hates you. This is not the worst thing that can happen." --Tyler Durden, Fight Club

Not Easy Finding the Right Activist Group

posted Thursday, 27 September 2007

I inquired about an activist group which I thought fought for all the things I stand for, but after digging a little deeper...

I don't think they're right for me (or I'm not right for them).  They just finished a month long fast in front of a military recruiting station.  Not just for the purpose of protesting the war, but because they want to remove all military recruiting stations from Pittsburgh.  I mean, come on, how realistic is that?  You gotta choose your battles!  I was reading the follow-up on that and they said it went well and they're happy about it.  Except, the war didn't end, the recruiting stations aren't going anywhere, and no one in Washington DC (or anywhere else) gives a shit about what's going on in Pittsburgh anyway.  Besides, I like the idea of having a military for defensive purposes.  Like, in case we get invaded by another country (but not for attacking other countries for the purpose of handing out billions of dollars of contracts to corporations at the taxpayer’s expense).  Anyway...

The group is actually an "umbrella group" for a bunch of smaller groups.  They have a Socialist group that holds anti-Capitalism protests, but I'm not anti-Capitalist.  I do think corporations need to be reigned in, beginning with removing a corporation's status as a "person," putting strict national and global laws on them regarding human and environmental safety, and definitely making them pay high taxes.  I'm also for higher taxes on wealthy people and using the money for social programs for the lower classes.  I know that's what Democrats are supposed to do, but since they're unable to do anything in Congress besides collect a paycheck, I've given up on them.  They're Republicrats now because they believe everyone wants to end this polarization and have a moderate government.  Since when has America ever NOT been polarized?  The difference now is that we're in the age of the internet anonymous with a government and mass media that goads us into fighting with each other.

What it comes down to is I'm willing to go out on the streets and get tear-gassed, arrested, and whatever it takes to change the direction of this country, but when I do it, it has be worth it.  These groups seem to be more interested in putting on a show.  In October, one of the groups plans to march down the streets in Georgetown (a rich neighborhood in DC) without a permit.  I think what will happen is that all the rich people in Georgetown will suddenly see that being rich is bad, or something, and give all their money to the poor people.  Yeah, that's what's going to happen.

I'm still looking for a group, but one without any "isms" attached to it and that knows exactly what it's fighting for, instead of protesting just for the sake of protesting.
