My 9-11 Post
Why do we Americans love to celebrate our tragedies?
I was skimming new posts on a blogger's website today and every other post was a tribute to 9/11. So, I guess every year on this day, we're all going to wallow in patriotic self-pity and romanticize an event that happened six years ago. I sympathize with people who lost loved ones on that day. It is their day to remember and mourn their losses, but the rest of us need to let it go. I mean, for Christ's sake, we still do this about Pearl Harbor on its anniversary.
All I'm saying is that a lot of tragedies have happened in America. Why does this tragedy deserve more attention than any other tragedy? People die everyday, but for some reason, we have to rehash the events on 9/11 and mourn it all over again. I still see cars with bumper stickers that say, "We Will Never Forget." It's true, we will never forget it, but do we have to relive it every year? There are other fish to fry now. We've got a new crisis almost every day that demands our attention. The people who died on 9/11 aren't coming back. It's over, and we got our revenge. In fact, we've killed thousands of Americans to get that revenge.
On one blog, the author wrote that anyone who doesn't acknowledge and pay tribute to 9/11 today is immoral, because that was the day the terrorists took our freedoms away.
No sir, that's our government doing that, not the terrorists. But, feel free to take a victim stance while we're invading another country that had nothing to do with 9/11. If you want to see some real terrorism on our own soil, just google the Jena 6. It's more like racial terrorism. Get angry about that. Protect your fellow Americans who helped make this country great, because some of them are under attack right now in Jena, Louisiana. Where's the outrage? Where are the film crews? Why did I hear nothing about this until Mos Def mentioned it on Real Time with Bill Maher? The saddest part of this crisis is the BBC.UK was the first to report on it (later CNN followed up). Is this 2007 or did we accidentally go through a time machine that took us back to the 50's?
I think I need to go sedate myself now.
