Nothing surprises me anymore.
I learned about this from Politico. Here's a post by Steven Bresnahan, "Congress to Say Christmas is Important. Sun and Moon Declared Good Too."
Iowa Republican Representative, Steve King, introduced H.Res 847 to the floor, a resolution "Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith." The vote passed 372-9, 10 took no position, and 40 didn't vote at all.
I can't think of anything going on in the world right now that could possibly be more important than this. King introduced the bill because two resolutions passed in October to recognize and honor Ramadan (Muslim holiday) and Diwali (Hindu holiday), and I guess Christians felt left out. Even though Christmas is already recognized as a national holiday, and I don't know what we could do to recognize it more.
Is this resolution to guarantee that Christmas remains the most important-est religious holiday (now that they're getting competition from Ramadan and Diwali)? Or so Right-Wing Christians don't feel like a war is being waged on them, not that they don't love that shit anyway. I don't know and I'm having a hard time coming up with jokes about it because it's so ridiculous on its own. I understand why they passed the resolutions on recognizing Ramadan and Diwali, although religious holidays shouldn't be of importance to Congress. In fact, it's crossing the line of Separation of Church and State. Still, Hannakuh and Kwanzaa didn't get any resolutions passed recognizing them. So, does that mean they don't count??
Right now, God is in Heaven rubbing his forehead and asking himself, "Where did I go wrong?" And another Angel just lost its wings and was set on fire.
GovTrack.us and Congress.org both have a lot of useful info about Congress members, upcoming bills, and previous votes.
